Word Connections

📖Definition

In these questions, you need to find two words, one from each group, that complete the sentence in the best way.

✏️Example

hear is to ( loud ear talk ) as see is to ( watch clearly eye )

Knowledge Required

A good vocabulary and an ability to spot connections.

How To Answer

First, we'll try and eliminate some answers through looking at their word types. Write down what type each word is. Here's a reminder of the four main types of word: Verb - action word Adverb - word describing a verb Noun - an object or thing Adjective - word describing a noun

OK. Let's look at the words in the first group. loud - adjective ear - noun talk - verb and noun

And in the second group… watch - verb and noun clearly - adverb eye - verb and noun

The two words we're looking for will be of the same type so we can dismiss the adjective and the adverb as there's only one each of those.

So, we need to look at the following connections: hear - ear: an ear hears. hear - talk: an ear listens to someone talk. see - watch: watch and see are both things involving vision. see - eye: an eye sees.

So, the missing words are ear and eye as the connection to the given words is that they do them - an ear hears, an eye sees.

There are other types of connection that might be used. Here are some common ones, the correct answers are written in italics.

Synonyms (Similar Meanings)

weird is to ( familiar peculiar frightening ) as normal is to ( order boring usual )
weird' and 'peculiar' are synonyms and so are 'normal' and 'usual'.

Antonyms (Opposite Meanings)

definite is to ( fact decide uncertain ) as false is to ( fake real liar )
'definite' and 'uncertain' are opposite in meaning as are 'false' and 'real'.

Relationships

In the example at the top, the connection is the relationship between hear and ear, and see and eye. In this case, it's a noun (ear, eye) and what it does, a verb (hear, see). There are many other sorts of relationships. Here are a couple of examples.
kitten is to ( cat paw fur ) as puppy is to ( wag dog lead ).
The relationship is a young animal and its adult form.
television is to ( volume documentary screen ) as camera is to ( lens photographer pose ).
The relationship is an object and a part of it.
Try and think up some other relationships - here are a few to start off.
Object and its colour eg. snow - white. Animal and the sound it makes eg. lion - roar. Occupation and where it's found eg. clown - circus.
