📖Definition
In these questions, you are given five words, three of which are linked. You have to find the two odd ones out.
✏️Example
shriek loud yell shout anger
Knowledge Required
A good vocabulary is needed and also knowledge of the different word types.
✅How To Answer
These are quite straightforward. You might spot the odd ones out straightaway, if not, working through each of the 5 answers should reveal them.
First, write down what type each word is.
Here's a reminder of the four main types of word:
Verb - action word Adverb - word describing a verb Noun - an object or thing Adjective - word describing a noun
Verb - action word Adverb - word describing a verb Noun - an object or thing Adjective - word describing a noun
OK. Let's look at the possible answers now.
shriek - verb and noun
loud - adjective
yell - verb and noun
shout - verb and noun
anger - noun
So, we've got three words that can be both verbs and nouns, one that is only a noun and one that is an adjective. We can reject the adjective.
Let's look at the meanings of the other four words. shriek - a piercing cry
yell - a loud cry
shout - a loud cry
anger - a strong feeling of displeasure
So, the first three are some sort of cry, and the fourth isn't. The odd ones out are therefore loud and anger.
✏️Example
receive lend donate borrow give
Looking at each of the words, they're all verbs so we can't eliminate any on account of word type. So, let's look at their meanings.
receive - to be presented with something
lend - to give something for a temporary period
donate - to give to a good cause
borrow - to take something for a temporary period
give - to transfer possession of
So, basically with lend, donate, give you give something to someone else and with receive, lend you get something from someone else so it's these two that are the odd ones out.
