Method 1
Here, you have a couple of choices. You can think of as many letters as possible that can go at the end of the first word in the first pair OR, you can work your way through the alphabet, seeing if each letter in turn will fit.
The best method is perhaps a combination of the two. Try thinking of some letters that work with the first word and then check them with the others. If none of these letters turns out to be the answer, then work your way through the alphabet.
Looking at the first word here, the following letters fit:
lead leaf leak lean leap
lead leaf leak lean leap
See which of these can go at the beginning of the second word in the first pair.
dool fool kool nool pool
dool fool kool nool pool
So, only f and p work.
Now test these two on the second pair.
loaf and free are both words but neither loap nor pree are so, f is the answer.

Variances
