Word Connections

📖Definition

Word Connections questions are analogies. You are given one word relationship and must complete another relationship in the same way.

Knowledge Required

Know common relationships: synonym, antonym, category, part to whole, object to use, worker to tool, cause to effect and degree.

How To Answer

State the relationship between the first pair in a short phrase.
Apply that exact relationship to the second word.
Check that the answer has the same word type and direction as the first relationship.

✏️Example

ANCIENT is to MODERN as GENEROUS is to ___. selfish

Solution

Ancient and modern are opposites. The opposite of generous is selfish, so selfish completes the connection.

💡Multiple Choice Tip

Do not choose a word simply because it is related to the second word. It must match the same relationship as the first pair.

💡Tips/hints

Use a sentence frame: Ancient is the opposite of modern, so generous is the opposite of ____.
Watch the order. If the first pair goes small to large, the second pair should go in the same direction.
