11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning: How to Answer Odd One Out Questions

What Odd One Out Questions Actually Ask
In an odd one out question, your child sees five shapes labelled A to E and must decide which one does not belong. It sounds simple, and that is exactly why children lose marks on it.
The trap is that most children read the question as “which shape looks strangest?” That is not the question. The real question is:
The golden rule: Four shapes must share a feature. One shape must lack it. If your child cannot explain what the other four have in common, they have not found the answer yet — no matter how odd their chosen shape looks.
This two-part test is the whole technique. Every correct answer has both halves: four the same, one different. Every wrong answer fails one of them.
The Trap That Costs Marks
Consider a set of five shapes where only one contains a triangle. The others contain a pentagon, a square, a pentagon and a square. A child in a hurry sees the lone triangle and circles it.
But look at the remaining four. Two have pentagons; two have squares. They are not the same as each other. There is no shared feature for the triangle to be missing, so the triangle cannot be justified as the odd one out. The real difference must lie somewhere else — in the shading, the lines, or the arrangement.
This is the single most valuable habit to teach:
Tip: Before circling an answer, ask your child to finish this sentence out loud: “A, C, D and E all have ______, but B does not.” If they cannot fill the blank, they must keep looking.
A Worked Example
Here is how the reasoning runs on a typical question involving five shapes, each with a straight line drawn across it.

Notice that steps 1 to 3 all fail, and that is fine. Ruling features out is progress, not wasted time. Children often panic when the first thing they check does not work; teach them that a rejected feature narrows the search.
The Checklist to Work Through
Children who succeed at odd one out questions are not more imaginative — they are more systematic. Give your child a fixed order to run through so nothing obvious gets missed under pressure.

Did you know? Examiners deliberately include one or two decoy features in most odd one out questions — differences that are real but do not split the set four-to-one. Recognising a decoy quickly is a skill in itself, and it comes only with repeated practice.
Two Features That Catch Children Out
Arrowheads and blunt ends. In one classic question type, each picture shows two shapes joined by a line with an arrowhead at one end. Every shape combination differs, and the shading differs too — but the answer lies in which shape holds the arrowhead. Four pictures have the blunt end in the square; one has the arrowhead in the square. That single positional detail is the answer.
Shading inside a specific region. In another common type, five circles each contain a small segment. Some circles have two black dots, others have one. That looks decisive until you notice that two pictures share the “two black dots” feature, so it cannot split the set four-to-one. The real answer is narrower: which colour dot sits inside the segment. Four have a black dot in the segment; one has a white dot.
The lesson in both cases is the same — keep narrowing. A feature is only useful when it applies to exactly four shapes.
Building the Habit at Home
Odd one out is one of the most trainable non-verbal reasoning question types, because the method never changes. Try this simple routine.

Timing in the Real Exam
Most 11+ non-verbal reasoning papers allow roughly 30 to 45 seconds per question. That is enough time to run a checklist, but not enough to stare. Teach your child to:
- Run the checklist quickly, in a fixed order.
- Stop the moment a feature splits the set four-to-one.
- If nothing splits four-to-one within about 40 seconds, mark the question, choose the best candidate, and move on.
- Come back at the end with fresh eyes if time allows.
Tip: An unanswered question scores nothing, so never leave a blank. A justified guess after eliminating two or three options is far stronger than no answer at all.
